The Monumental Mammoth
is a larger than life community project.

Colombian Mammoths roamed wetlands 2.58 million years ago, have been found in the Las Vegas desert along with other ancient Pleistocene mammals.

In the early 2000's, 23,000 acres of fossil beds in the Nevada desert was proposed as a disposal area. A small group of women became aware of the paleontological treasures buried there, and began an 8-year effort to protect what was nearly lost.
In 2015, Sherri Grotheer, one of the founding members of The Protectors of Tule Springs, presented her story to a group of Girl Scouts. Tahoe proposed creating the Monumental Mammoth; to dispose the trash littering the preserved land, and bring people from the Las Vegas community to clean up the area while simultaneously contributing to a work of art.
The sculpture's conception became a Girl Scout Gold Award project, Burning Man Honorarium Recipient, and future trailhead installation of Ice Age Fossils State Park.
The Monumental Mammoth was constructed with a structural-steel skeletal structure by Luis Varela-Rico and a recycled metal skin by Dana Albany. Hundreds of members of the community and participants from far and wide came to aid our efforts!
